Now, we’re all well aware of the term, ‘put your foot down!’ In most cases, it’s used in high-speed getaways or as motivation to put someone in their place. Right now, AK SPORTS (Madi Carr) is championing this very statement, serving up another hammer from her ‘Polarize’ EP, adding to Gallery’s steadily growing catalogue. Riding high after a quick trip home to Sydney, which featured a charged live-streamed set atop the label’s HQ, Madi is stoked to share ‘Tank Girl’.
Perfectly titled, this one is relentless. Repetitive pulses wrap themselves around parts of the ear you never knew you had, whilst sharp hi-hats fill in any concern for spare air. There’s a sense of drive in this record, a determination to cross the proverbial ‘“no woman’s land” and send listeners to the highest of heights. If music had the ability to see around corners, this new single would certainly be in the discussion.
What's more, the visual reimagining is one you won’t forget. This expertly designed video clip was animated by Stacie Ant, whereby Madi and three of her closest friends are beamed into an alternate universe. Here on this barren planet, dressed in an array of neon and armed to the teeth, the girls lay waste to a freakish bald monster. From grenades to gatling guns, the crew set this giant alight, revelling in their wicked ways! Point of the story, don’t mess with AK SPORTS and her crew when they’ve got a head of steam.
Stacie Ant is a Russian/Canadian new media artist and curator currently based in Berlin. Ant draws on her experiences as a female artist while developing the critical views of our technologically-saturated contemporary society that inform her work. Using video, installation, and performance, Ant reinvents elements of contemporary culture through fictional, maximalist narratives.
'The video was heavily inspired by old school post apocalyptic films, particularly Mad Max and Tank Girl. We wanted to capture a video game-like experience in the video, with attacking mutated monsters and a girl squad driving around the anarchist desert - I think the track really painted this image quite vividly for me.'
Stacie Ant’s character-driven work operates as a critique and rejection of the male gaze, enhanced by a modern culture of digital immersion. She harnesses the very digital tools offered in a technologically-dependent world as a means of empowering female identity and sexuality. Often humorous, Ant’s work offers a way of looking at a fast-paced digital realm through a lens of irony and satire.
My whole body agrees with the pace of this short but solid track list. A generous helping of acoustic rhythm samples ignited by breakbeats add extra attention to full range movement on the dancefloor. Not a beat wasted. cherub420
